A Prayer Of Thanks For Our Mother Phyllis (August 2, 2003)
Author: Stephen

Dear Heavenly Father, You have said that wherever two or more gather in Your name, there You shall be also. Therefore we ask You to join us this morning for this celebration of life.

Thank You Father for the gift of Phyllis, our mother, teacher, friend, and confidant.

As we commit the remains of her physical being to the earth, Father we ask that you help us to remember and give thanks for her spirit and for the many gifts, all of which you gave her, and by which she enriched our lives.

Help us to remember her love of life, and her love and respect for people, and that caring, compassion, respect, and giving were the hinges on which the doors of her love swung open to all those she encountered.

Help us to remember her grace and elegance, her curiosity about, and interest in, the world and life, particularly our lives; interest that often translated into support or help.

Help us to remember her independence, her keen and ever active intellect, and her sense of optimism and fun.

Father, help us to remember and give thanks for her courage in the face of great pain. Even in her infirmity and her immobility she would say “don’t do it for me, I must do it for myself.” The relentless deterioration of age did not rob her of her dignity, her caring for others, nor her keen sense of humor.

Help us to remember her courage to champion ideas and ideals that have benefited many, most particularly in this community.

Father we remember our mother as one who was deeply woven into the fabric of our lives and of her community through caring relationships. We pray that she will find a place at the foot of Your Throne of Grace.

Finally Father, we pray that You will help each one of us to live up to our mother’s example of leading an active life of caring for, and service to, those around us.

We ask these things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen
